Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) at Work

At the heart of GovDash’s AI platform is a retrieval-augmented generation system. When users pose a question or request, the system first performs a vector-based search across their document library. Here’s how it works:

1. Embeddings: Every document is pre-processed to extract key details, organize the information, and convert it into numeric vectors, called embeddings, that can be used to find semantically similar phrases. Therefore, words like "ocean" and "sea" are closely related in high-dimensional space (3000+ dimensions), so we can search for meaning rather than direct text search.
   
   

2. Similarity Search: When a query is submitted, it’s converted into a vector and compared against the library using cosine similarity. The most relevant content is retrieved.
   
   

3. Contextual Generation: The selected snippets are then passed into the appropriate LLM to generate grounded, accurate responses.

This hybrid approach ensures responses are not only well-formed but deeply rooted in the user’s own materials, a critical advantage when accuracy, compliance, and nuance are non-negotiable.
